Alcohol and driving don’t mix...firstly it is illegal and secondly it is dangerous. Even a small amount of alcohol can impair a driver’s ability to drive safely.
A large number of crashes involve drivers who have consumed alcohol and/or drugs. These drivers also put other road users at risk, including their passengers and other vehicles.
Road Safe Hawke’s Bay, Police and Corrections are working on a programme that is either delivered in the Prison or for people who have community service as part of their sentence. The programme is run for a day and demonstrates a realistic account of the risks of driving impaired and the risks these pose for all other road users.
After attending one of these sessions in the Youth Unit at Hawke's Bay Regional Prison Prison, the young men decided they wanted to be part of making a difference to keep our roads safe. A workshop was run to look at some education opportunities and how the inmates could be involved.
From this process the young men decided they would like to create a clothing range that provided road safety messages in a creative way. A local designer was contracted to help them bring their ideas to life. As you will see the work that they did fits well within the youth culture. Another part of this design work was the development of billboards. Discussions are currently underway to have these placed near the prison and will form part of the Road Safe HB billboard stock and will be rotated across the region.
We are also working with the Maori Focus Unit who will carve a number of toanga to also be used as part of our education programme. The inmates have received certificates that highlights the design program that they have been involved in and it is envisaged these can be used as part of their curriculum vitae.
The objective is to raise awareness of the risks but also to increase skills & knowledge around problem solving on how we can keep ourselves and others safe on our roads. The message from the partners is firstly plan on how you are going to get home after socialising or as a host how you can provide a safe host responsible social event. Road safety is all of our responsibility and we can Influence others to as well.
