Rhythm and Vines is one of the major events held over the Christmas and New Year season. The event is attended by a large number of young people. Generally they head to Gisborne around the 26th of December. New Zealand Police and Road Safe HB provided a fatigue stop at Ruapunga. The purpose of the stop was to provide refreshments for drivers, an education opportunity and also conduct compulsory breath testing.
Fatigue is one of the most common contributing factors in a number of crashes in the Hawkes Bay. Signs of fatigue can include: Blinking repeatedly, yawning, excessive speed changes, drowsiness, centre-line drift. For more information please see the NZTA website - www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/driving-safely/fatigue/infographic
Drivers are offered to take a break after they have been breath tested. They are provided free refreshments. Staff are also available to educate drivers on how to minimise the symptoms. These can include - Getting plenty of sleep before travelling (7-8 hours), plan to take breaks along the way, share the driving if possible, eat small snacks along the way and drink plenty of water.
