Road Safe HB supported local students and Police to attend the PCT competitions held at Police College. These are our future drivers and it is a great way to start educating young people on safe driving and safe road use. Well done to all the students who attended.
Liz and Linda attended the road safety education day at Wairoa Primary School recently. The students learnt about many things including the importance of wearing you seat belt. The children also learnt about drive way safety, they went home to talk to their families about safe play and knowing where the kids are when backing.
Once again the Road Safe HB team supported the Mocktail Bar at the Central Hawke's Bay Sports Awards. The event is opened by the Central Hawkes Bay Collage Kapa Haka Group. On behalf of the Road Safe HB Team, we would like to thank the students for their outstanding efforts at this event.
Christmas is nearly upon us, although it may look like Santa's Cave it is actually the Road Safe HB office. The staff are preparing the packs to go out to the work places who have registered their work place parties. Well done to the organisations that have.
Road Safe HB team will again be promoting sober driving along with host responsibility when organising a social event particularly over the Christmas & New Year period.
Road Safe Hawke’s Bay created a party register where people organising a party could register the event. By doing this they receive a party pack that provides them with useful information around host responsibility. The party register has now been extended to work place Christmas parties….if you are having a work place party, then register it and receive an information pack and also go into the draw for prizes. The purpose of this is to ensure everyone has a great time and that people are safe. Each party that is registered will go into the lucky draw prizes, including a party pack and a barbecue cooked by the Road Safe HB staff. We would also like to wish your staff a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Safe travels to everyone. Register your party at www.partyregisterhb.co.nz Call 027 474 7294 or Email linda.anderson@hbrc.govt.nz Linda Anderson, Regional Manager Road Safe HB recently attended the ACC Conference in Auckland. Thank you to Sally Phelps (Injury Prevention Consultant, ACC) for arranging this opportunity.
Highlights of the Conference included international speakers who presented on marketing strategies, work place injury plans during the development of the Olympic Games facilities in the United Kingdom and other relevant topics. One of the highlights was also a work shop held around a new joint driver licence program between ACC and the New Zealand Transport Agency. This was of particular interest as this is something that Road Safe HB will be focussing on in 2016. One of the issues for Hawkes Bay is the number of drivers who have either no licence or the incorrect licence which is a huge concern to all the road safety partners. Alcohol and driving don’t mix...firstly it is illegal and secondly it is dangerous. Even a small amount of alcohol can impair a driver’s ability to drive safely. A large number of crashes involve drivers who have consumed alcohol and/or drugs. These drivers also put other road users at risk, including their passengers and other vehicles. Road Safe Hawke’s Bay, Police and Corrections are working on a programme that is either delivered in the Prison or for people who have community service as part of their sentence. The programme is run for a day and demonstrates a realistic account of the risks of driving impaired and the risks these pose for all other road users. After attending one of these sessions in the Youth Unit at Hawke's Bay Regional Prison Prison, the young men decided they wanted to be part of making a difference to keep our roads safe. A workshop was run to look at some education opportunities and how the inmates could be involved. From this process the young men decided they would like to create a clothing range that provided road safety messages in a creative way. A local designer was contracted to help them bring their ideas to life. As you will see the work that they did fits well within the youth culture. Another part of this design work was the development of billboards. Discussions are currently underway to have these placed near the prison and will form part of the Road Safe HB billboard stock and will be rotated across the region. We are also working with the Maori Focus Unit who will carve a number of toanga to also be used as part of our education programme. The inmates have received certificates that highlights the design program that they have been involved in and it is envisaged these can be used as part of their curriculum vitae. The objective is to raise awareness of the risks but also to increase skills & knowledge around problem solving on how we can keep ourselves and others safe on our roads. The message from the partners is firstly plan on how you are going to get home after socialising or as a host how you can provide a safe host responsible social event. Road safety is all of our responsibility and we can Influence others to as well. As part of the regional road safety campaigns over 2015 Labour Weekend Police provided an alcohol checkpoint on SH5 at the Mohaka bridge rest stop. The focus is 'keeping everyone safe on our roads.
Over Labour Weekend Police, Fire and Ambulance services teamed up with Road Safe HB to promote safe driving. Police set up breath alcohol checkpoints across the region and these where supported by fatigue stops by Road Safe HB.
